Are You Mildly Dehydrated?

Water makes up 50 to 70 percent of the human body, making it the body’s largest component. Water protects vital organs, regulates body temperature, and aids in nutrient absorption and all biochemical reactions. It is imperative that we stay hydrated. A 10 percent loss of water can cause serious problems. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and make you feel really crummy! Even mild dehydration can slow your metabolism and decrease your energy.

Experts recommend consuming 64 ounces (eight 8-ounce glasses) of water throughout the day. However, everyone has variable daily activity, so it’s most important to listen to our bodies and let thirst be the guide. Also, be aware that caffeine and alcohol are dehydrating: drink extra water when you have a latte or a glass of wine! To be healthy, we must be hydrated because our body’s functions depend upon it. If your urine is yellow, you better grab a big glass of water or two!

Weight loss coaches often recommend drinking a big glass of water before meals to curb the appetite. If you tend to overeat, this might help you control your portions and hydrate yourself at the same time!
