Midllife Confusion; Are We Old Or Are We Young?

I usually workout independently; determining what hurts and what doesn't and plan my exercise routine accordingly. Well, I got a little bored and thought I would change it up a bit and take some group classes. Here we go; No Limits Circuit. I walked in the class only to see twenty and thirty year olds buzzing in their little groups. Feeling a little unsure of what was to come because of my "maturity," I kind of wanted to leave. The music began and there was no stopping (I'm fairly competitive). I bounced around, jumping rope, doing burpies (they totally suck!), and threw weights airborn, back and forth above my head (I do not recommend this to anyone). Mission accomplished! Was it worth it? Ummmm, no and a few joints reminded me of that the next day.

At the end of the week I decided to do a class called Foundations. It sounded a little tamer. I showed up and was surprised to see that grey hair, pot bellys and wrinkles were abundant. Dont get me wrong, I respect anyone that attends, but being the youngest in the class was no more comfortable than being the oldest! Reluctantly, I stayed in the room. The adorable silver haired, instructor pranced in; it honestly looked as though they airbrushed a 17 year old's body to her 70 year old head. Now, I was curious!

Surprisingly, I was impressed with the pace. I opted for the heavier bars, bands and weights which kept the exercises challenging, and was so happy that the routines were kept simple and additional time was spent on stretching. Moreover, the instructor rocked! I hope to be like her when I grow up!

Sometimes midlife is a little uncomfortable, but remember:

1. Don't try to be something you are not. Egos will get us into big trouble!

2. Be kind to your body and remember that your wisdom allows you to be a master of modification and moderation.

3. Be proud of your motivation and efforts to be the best you can be.

4. Accept your challenges and know that people of all ages have physical ailments.

5. Don't feel like other's are judging: most are welcoming and respect all that are making the effort!

6. Don't be afraid to ask for help because giving up is not an option!
